LAKEVIEW
The community of Lakeview is located in Calgary’s southwest along the north shore of Glenmore Lake. The area offers excellent views of the lake and the Elbow River Valley. Lakeview was annexed in 1956, and development began in 1962. Lakeview residents can access a number of outdoor recreational opportunities, including Glenmore Park, boat docks, regional bike paths, Weaselhead flats hiking trail, and Heritage Park. There are also a number of schools in the area.
Nestled between Glenmore Trail SW and Glenmore Reservoir, its boundaries stretch from Crowchild Trail SW to 37th Street SW, the western city limits at this point. The Tsuu T'ina Nation Indian reserve borders it to the west.
Lakeview School building was closed and re-opened as Calgary Girls' School (a charter school)In 2006, Lakeview had a population of 5,581[1].
The community was founded in 1962, six years after the city of Calgary annexed the land it was built on. The name Lakeview was chosen quite obviously for the view of Glenmore Reservoir its location afforded. Many of the original homes were built by Engineered Homes Ltd. of Calgary.
Residences south of 66th Avenue are part of a smaller development named Lakeview Village, which features larger, more expensive homes.
The Lakeview community association is active within the community. The community hall, which consists of a main hall as well as a number of smaller meeting rooms, hosts a number of groups, including Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders. Quilting, arts and crafts, and martial arts are a few of the other activities that take place at the hall. Bridge is also popular in the community, with the Bridge club meeting a number of afternoons and evenings each week.
The community association also maintains a pleasure skating rink each winter, and its summer soccer program is extremely popular. The community preschool is also well attended. An excellent playground facility is located nearby the hall, and contains climbers, swings, slides, rocking riders, and spinners. Lakeview also hosts a number of special events each year, including family fun day, which includes a climbing wall, origami, sidewalk chalk drawing, baked goods, and crafts and live music.
